Hey all, let’s dive into our newest Reviews topic! 🙌🏻

#Tip 1 focuses on answering a common question

How and why do Reviews matter for SEO?

Reviews aren’t just great for increasing conversion, boosting customer trust, and powering word-of-mouth marketing – they help you get more traffic from search engines. And as we know, SEO rankings place more weight on what users have to say.

Reviews are one form of user-generated content (UGC) that search engines consider. UGC racks up serious SEO points by providing sites with fresh content, bundles of backlinks, and sources for organic attributes.

Here is exactly why reviews are so good for helping you rise in search engine results:

1. Reviews provide search engines with fresh, relevant content

It’s not always possible (or beneficial) for a brand to churn out tons of new content, especially if this content is produced explicitly for SEO purposes, but search engines want to see your site is active, so what’s a brand to do?

2. Reviews shape basic SEO attributes naturally

Sites are optimized for search engines through a system of basic attributes such as keywords, titles, back-links, and internal links. Regarding reviews, customers work as an army of link builders and keyword writers, so your SEO structure is shaped without you having to lift a finger.

3. Reviews naturally help your site rank for long-tail keywords

In contrast to highly competitive, general search items, long-tail keywords are specific phrases with low search competition that are much easier to rank highly for. By looking at real customer comments, you can see how they are phrasing their concerns, and you can then integrate these phrases as keywords for your on-site optimization.

💡 This also helps you improve your brand messaging to use the words your customers want to hear.

What about negative reviews? 😱

What about negative reviews? 😱

That’s an excellent question, @jlee! :)

Many people are under the false impression that bad reviews will hurt their SEO. In reality, you won’t be penalized. Google knows no one is perfect and that even the best sites can get bad reviews.

Their team of manual reviewers is taught to take negative reviews with a grain of salt and dig deeper to understand the overall reputation of a site. Their guide for manual SEO rates specifically says to read the negative reviews and bad feedback before assuming this reflects a site’s reputation accurately.

In this way, Google will not penalize sites that receive bad reviews if there is more content that points to the site being reputable since it makes for a more natural Google rating overall.

Even negative reviews often contain keywords that are relevant to your brand, which helps when consumers are searching for products. If you don’t publish negative reviews, you miss out on potential traffic to your website or products.

In the end, negative reviews tend to provide a necessary balance, as an abundance of fake “positive” reviews or biased reviews sometimes can result in all the reviews being suspended from a key review site which will heavily impact SEO.

⭐️ Main takeaway: Reviews — even negative ones — can positively boost your SEO.

And remember, publicly responding to negative reviews builds trust by offering potential customers insight that they may not have gotten otherwise.

#Tip 2 covers common issues that may be stopping you from generating reviews

  1. Automatic Reviews Requests are disabled
  2. The integration between Yotpo and your store is broken
  3. Automatic Review Requests aren't optimized for conversions

Check automatic review requests are enabled

Make sure that automatic review requests are enabled in your account. This helpful article will help you check and make sure everything is running as it should.

2. Check orders are being pulled from your store

3. Check the Emails dashboard

Please view your Emails Dashboard in order to check if automatic review requests were sent to your customers in the last month. To get to the Emails Dashboard, click Analytics > Emails in your Yotpo Account.

Scroll down to the Automatic Emails section and check if there were emails that were sent to your customers in the last month. If there were no review requests at all or you suspect that fewer requests were sent than there should have been, please contact Yotpo Support.

4. Check review requests are optimized

Make sure that your automatic review requests are optimized in order to attract customers to submit reviews. One of the best ways to ask for Reviews is to respond to your reviews — even the negative ones!

While receiving a negative review might feel difficult at first, responding to a negative review and engaging with your customers is critical. Responding to a negative review gives your brand a chance to remedy any issues the customer had with their shopping experience. This can help reduce churn, build brand trust, and incentivize customers who left a negative review to revise or change a review once any issues have been solved.
